The Crime Directorate mainly deals with the prevention and investigation of criminal offenses, with the exception of traffic offenses, which are handled by the Traffic Directorate.

Criminal investigation department 1
The KK1 and its employees deal with the following offenses, among others:
- Death investigations
- Arson offenses
- Violations of the Narcotics Act
- Crimes against sexual self-determination
- Environmental offenses
- Missing persons cases
- Robbery offenses
- Computer crime
- False currency offenses
- Casualty offenses involving non-cash means of payment
- Economic crime
- Weapons offenses
Criminal Investigation Department 2
In KK2 the employees work in the following areas, among others:
- the Central Identification Service (including qualified search for and securing of evidence)
- the storage of criminal files
- the data station
and - crime prevention
- the protection of victims

The KK3 comprises the following areas of responsibility:

Criminal Investigation Department 4
Responsible for Hattingen, Sprockhövel, Wetter and Herdecke
Regional processing of the following crimes, among others:
- Crimes involving bodily injury
- Street crime
- Juvenile delinquency
- Property crime
- Crimes against older people
Fraud offences are processed here centrally for the entire district.
Criminal Investigation Department 5
Responsible for Ennepetal, Schwelm, Breckerfeld and Gevelsberg
Regional processing of the following crimes, among others:
- Crimes involving bodily injury
- Street crime
- Juvenile delinquency
- Property crime
Car and burglary offenses are processed here centrally for the entire district.
